FAIRFIELD EAST.
This township was formed from Fairfield in 1869.  It is situated in the southern part of the county, on French Creek, and comprises 7,734 acres of fine farming country.  It is well watered by French Creek and its tributaries, of which Sugar Creek, crossing the north-eastern portion, is the most important.  The attention of the people is devoted largely to agriculture and dairying.  By the last census report the population was 741.  At the organization of the township it contained five schools.  The first in the locality was taught by a Mr. Haskins in 1802.  The present number of schools is five, with an attendance of 118 pupils.  The annual cost is about $700.  The flourishing borough of Cochranton, and the villages of Shaw's Landing and Pettis, are the business centres of the township.
