HAYFIELD TOWNSHIP.

This township was formed in 1830, and contains 22,641 acres. The date of the first settlement is not known; suffice it to say that Conrad Cole came here in 1802, and is said to be the first man who surmounted the Alleghanies with a wagon. The streams Cussewago and French Creek with their branches drain the soil, which is some of the best the county affords for agriculture. The population of the township by the last census was 1,824. Dairying, stock-breeding and farming are the leading pursuits of the people. There are, at present, in the township seventeen schools, employing 25 teachers, with an average attendance of 325 scholars, and cost about $2,500 per year.
